ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Reporting Student Absences

Absence, and the reason for absence, must be reported by the student's parent or legal guardian by calling the Attendance Office at 908-851-6570 between 7:30a.m.-9:00a.m. on the day of the absence.

Upon returning to school after an absence, the student must present a valid note from the parent/guardian, doctor, dentist, and/or lawyer stating the reason for the absence to the Attendance Office. Student absences for any reason shall be confirmed by parent/guardian unless the student has reached his/her majority.

A student with an absence not reported by the parent or guardian, shall be marked truant and subject to appropriate discipline, in accordance with attendance procedures. Absences due to illness will be considered UNEXCUSED unless a doctor's note is submitted to the Attendance Office.

ATTENDANCE TERMINOLOGY

Excused Absence

Only valid excuses are recognized as suitable reasons for a student's absence. In this district a valid excuse is one for personal illness, legal matters, a religious observance or death of a member of the immediate family. Verification to certify the legitimacy of the absence should be brought to the Attendance Office upon the student's return to school. Verification may be in the form of:

- Doctor's note
- Court document
-Letter from the religious group
- Documentation concerning the death of a member of the immediate family

Unexcused Absence

All student absences from the class will be classified as unexcused and shall be charged against the student's attendance record. Unexcused absences are those that are not recognized as board approved excused absences.

Tardy

Students must be in the classroom when the bell rings. Students who arrive in the room after the bell rings are tardy.

Truancy

Truancy is an absence that is not designated as excused or unexcused.

Early Release from School

The student must present to the Attendance Office a note signed by the parent/guardian before 8:15a.m. The note must state the reason for the request and include a home and/or cell phone number where the parent/guardian may be reached. Only then will an excused early pass be issued.
