Fake or Real?

Besides, as the vilest Writer has his Readers, so the greatest Liar has his Believers; and it often happens, that if a Lie be believ’d only for an Hour, it has done its Work, and there is no farther occasion for it. Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it; so that when Men come to be undeceiv’d, it is too late; the Jest is over, and the Tale has had its Effect…
Jonathan Swift (1710)

Prevent the spread of misinformation. Check before you share!

When selecting sources to use for research, evaluate them using the suggestions in this CRAAP chart.

To determine the accuracy of a claim, use these fact-checking strategies:

1. Has someone already checked this?

2. Find the original source
  Follow links if provided
Copy and paste a key phrase into a search engine
Do a Reverse image search on Google

3. Research the authority and reputation of the author/publisher/source
Don't just accept what they say about themselves
OR Start your research with a known expert

4. Activate your prior knowledge
Is this information consistent with what you already know to be true?

5. Think about your emotional response to the information
If the information makes you angry, makes you laugh, makes you cry, disgusts you - fact check it

More detailed information about how to check information can be found in Caulfield, Michael A. Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers
